The yearly pilgrimage begins in Srinagar and Pahalgam and concludes at the 3,888-meter-high Amarnath cave temple, which is located around 141 kilometres from Srinagar. Every year, during the Shravani Mela in July-August, the yatra draws thousands of pilgrims (Shravan month in Hindu calendar).
The Board is in charge of overseeing the Amarnath Yatra. The pilgrimage consumes a significant amount of state administration's time, and the yatra is heavily guarded. The state administration begins deploying personnel at least 15 days before to the start of the event since security forces must be stationed along the entire national highway from Lakhanpur to the Kashmir Valley as well as other roads like Baltal and Pahalgam.
Only during the summer months is it possible to make the Yatra walk over the south Kashmir Himalayan highlands to the Holy Cave Shrine of Shri Amarnathji.
The Holy Cave Shrine of Shri Amarnathji, where the image of Lord Shiva, in the form of a Lingam, is naturally created of ice stalagmite and which waxes and wanes with the moon, attracts the pious flock during the month of Shravan (July–August). Shri Amarnath Yatra will last for a particular amount of time, usually starting on the auspicious Hindu holiday of Skandshasthi, and will end on Shravan Purnima (Raksha Bandan).
The shrine must be reached via an uphill trip that takes several days to complete because the temple is not directly accessible by road. For those who want to easily access the Cave, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has begun offering helicopter services to the temple. This year, pilgrims can use a direct helicopter service to Amarnath Yatra from Srinagar for the first time.
Each bhandara aspires to provide the travellers or yatris with the services that other bhandaras have overlooked or are unable to provide. They are the best illustration of constructive rivalry and the epitome of the win-win approach. Any food you can imagine to eat is available up there in the hills. The list includes limitless items like popcorn, a cold beverage, Manchurian, cotton candy, Chowmein, burgers, and fried rice. But all of the food is totally vegetarian. In other words, once you get to Pahalgam or Baltal, you can stop worrying about food during the tour to amarnath by helicopter. Baltal and Pahalgam are both accessible routes to the Amaranth Cave. The pahalgam trail is challenging, and getting to the cave takes days.
It is thought that Lord Shankar actually travelled through Pahalgam to get to the cave. Baltal is a brief route. When everyone is at your side, going back and forth is simple to manage in a day. If you have a fair amount of stamina, you should be able to make it back to the base camp by four in the evening. You should set off at the very least by four in the morning. You have the option of travelling via Palki, pony, helicopter, or your powerful legs.
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has been ordered by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to begin offering direct helicopter service for pilgrims from Srinagar to Panchtarni, the final resting place at a height of 3,500 metres from where a six-kilometer hike leads to the revered Amarnath cave.
To date, there has been a helicopter service available for pilgrims travelling from Baltal and Pahalgam, the two main routes to the Amarnath Temple, to Panchtarni, from whence they can either walk or use the services of ponies and palanquins.
Nearly 61 kilometres separate the Baltal and Pahalgam paths from the Amarnath Temple. Although Baltal, which is 15 km from the sacred cave, is the shorter way to the Amarnath Temple, the government has moved the helipad there, giving pilgrims the choice of walking, riding a helicopter, or using horses. The lengthier path, which is around 46 km long and may be travelled by trek, horses, palanquins, or helicopters, is from Pahalgam to the Amarnath Temple.
Only on the relevant websites of the helicopter operators are advanced tickets available for purchase.
Sonmarg is 4 km away from Neelgrath, and Baltal, the previous location of the helipad, is 12 km away. Neelgrath is roughly 84 miles away from Srinagar, and the drive there can take up to 3 hours. The helipad is around 384 kilometres away from Jammu.
